Curriculum

Although the emphasis is on preventative medicine, the Conemaugh Family Medicine Residency Program also familiarizes residents with more specialized areas such as HIV and addiction treatment. In-house responsibilities are handled by a team of first and second-year residents. The third-year in-house call is generally limited to one week a year. First and second-year residents complete four (4) two-week rotations on night float covering Adult Medicine, Obstetrics, and Pediatrics. Weekend in-house coverage includes a team of one first and one second-year resident.

                                                                    Osteopathic Training
The Conemaugh three-year ACGME Family Medicine Residency Program with Osteopathic Recognition that incorporates Osteopathic Principles and Practice as a continual-learning process. Residents gain extensive experience in the outpatient settings utilizing Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy (OMT) as an integral part of patient care with additional experience allowed for using OMT inpatient through the Family Medicine Service and OMT consults. OPP lectures are provided monthly with options for Osteopathic journal club and research. Our faculty is comprised of several Osteopathic-Boarded Family physicians, and our residents are encouraged to complete their American Osteopathic Board of Family Physician certification upon graduation.   In addition, they will be thoroughly prepared to pass the OMT Performance Exam. Residents participate in daily teaching rounds with attending physicians, including surgical or specialty rounds. Technical field experience includes reviewing diagnostic tools including x-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, pathology reports, EKGs and echocardiograms.

                                                                 Educational Conferences
To foster an open and productive learning environment, Conemaugh Family Medicine residents participate in a variety of conferences including a daily huddle and a daily noon conference. Rather than creating a prolonged educational session weekly, we prefer a daily conference to enhance our camaraderie and avoid overly lengthy didactic sessions. Additional opportunities include monthly faculty-led meetings, seminars, and journal club to critique medical literature, monthly lectures on psychiatry, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, and emergency medicine, quarterly structured learning sessions with highly participatory small group sessions.

  • Daily noon conferences (in-person and Zoom)

                                                                  PharmD/Pharmacy Residents
A clinical pharmacist, along with pharmacy residents, join us for inpatient rounds and help care for patients in the clinic. While in the clinic, the pharmacists assist patients with anticoagulation, initiating treatment for Hepatitis C and HIV, cost of medications, quality metrics and much more. One of the pharmacists is a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist and provides extra education to our patients with diabetes. Our pharmacists are always happy to help.
